Trees and the Law in Canada was written by Julian Dunster.
With almost four decades of consulting experience in forestry, land use planning, environmental consulting, and arboriculture, Dr. Dunster is one of Canada’s foremost consulting arborists, and his work has garnered many awards.
He has delivered expert witness testimony in Canada and Hong Kong and has lectured and delivered training courses in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Chile and China. He provides expert advice for a wide range of clients, including private clients, and local governments.
He is recognised as an international expert on tree risk assessment. He designed and implemented the widely acclaimed Certified Tree Risk Assessor credential and programme (TRACE), and he is the lead author of the new Tree Risk Assessment manual published by ISA in 2013. He was a member of the panel of experts that designed the Tree Risk Assessment – Best Management Practices book and the ISA Tree Risk qualification (TRAQ) and he is a TRAQ instructor. Dr. Dunster was a member of the committee that wrote the ISA manual Managing Trees During Construction – Best Management Practices, and served on the ISA Plant Valuation and Appraisal from 2006 to 2017. He has also served on the American Society of Consulting Arborists board of examiners, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Arboriculture and Urban Forestry.
Based in Victoria, British Columbia, Julian is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), a Registered Professional Forester in British Columbia, a Registered Professional Planner (Canada and British Columbia), a Registered Consulting Arborist in the American Society of Consulting Arborists, and is Tree Risk Assessment Qualified with ISA. He has a Doctorate in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo, a Masters degree in forestry from the University of British Columbia, and a Bachelors degree in forestry from Bangor University in North Wales, Great Britain. Julian is an Honourary Life Member of the ISA and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA.
